Sooners Defensive Backs Coach Roy Manning was not listed by Lincoln Riley as one of the OU assistants joining him at USC, so it was no surprise that Manning was doing in-home visits with Coach Stoops as recently as Tuesday afternoon:
What IS a surprise is when a different recruit mentioned Manning as having contacting him, apparently on behalf of USC!
From the article, posted late Tuesday afternoon:
“Lincoln Riley has been blowing my phone up and that’s been impressive,” Jackson said. “With all that he has going on, for him him to take all this time to reach out to me shows me a lot. He wants to come in for a home visit but this week is pretty crazy so that will probably happen next week.
“He said he wants send in coach (Alex) Grinch (DC) first and then he’ll come in later. I’ve heard from coach Grinch too and also Roy Manning, who was the DB coach at OU. I’ve been texting back and forth with coach Manning and looking forward to meeting those guys in person.”
Jackson said he doesn’t know Manning that well yet but has heard good things.”
The article continues:
“He talked about their track record at Oklahoma for getting DBs drafted,” Jackson said. “He said they put three in the Draft the last three years with two starting in the League (NFL) right now. He said to give them a chance and said they’re about to do something special so I’m going to give them a shot for sure.
All a Big Mistake?
So it would appear that Manning is out doing in-home visits with Stoops for OU, while also texting with another recruit for USC.
Could there be some confusion or a misquote here on the article? Given the fluidness of the OU and USC coaching staff over the past 3 days, it could certainly be possible that Manning reached out on behalf of OU, yet was misidentified by either the recruit or the article’s author.
Reactions from Current Sooners and Recruits
The news traveling pretty fast, and reactions from both OU recruits, and even current OU players, were popping up Tuesday evening:
