At Monday’s introduction party in the Everest Center, new OU Head Coach thank several mentors, his family and others for supporting him on his journey through coaching. He also mentioned overcoming a difficult childhood, and how it shaped him as a person.
In 2019, Tiger Illustrated did a series on their then-DC Brent Venables, detailing growing up in Salina, Kansas. After Venables was hired as OU’s new Head Coach the folks at Tiger Illustrated released the article for all to read, and man it is story. We may have known of Venables since his first stint at OU, or even since his days at Kansas State, but there is a lot we don’t know.
“So I got into my buddy’s car and we drove around until we found where Jim and my mom were, at a bar. I remember thinking that this was a moment that was way overdue. I remember telling myself in the car: “This is going to stop now. I’m big enough and old enough that I’m going to help my mom. I’m going to give her a way out.”
